I know that there were no demolition derbies, airplane wing-walkers or displays of electronic equipment. Fair visitors may have attended some harness racing or an "oxen-pull." In 2010 the Olmsted County Fair will be Aug. 2-8, and plans call for a gala event filled with special features marking its 150th anniversary. I've been asked by fair board president Pat Hurley to be on the committee planning the celebration. Barb already shared a wedding story at the fair in 1888. Seems Thomas Elford of Douglas married Adeline Postier, a resident of Kalmar Township just west of Rochester. An earlier grandstand crowd of 1,500 watched the ceremony on the horse-racing track. Four preachers were involved, with the Rev. W.H. McGauflin hearing the couple say "I do." Last weekend of AZ state fair. This is the last weekend of the Arizona State Fair and organizers say there are lots of deals to be had! Fair attendance so far is off by about 15%. That was expected by fair organizers which is why they decided to cut the cost so deep for customers. Today is happy hour friday. From noon to 6pm fair-goers will find 1/2 price admission, $1 games and rides plus $1 food items. Saturday there is a buy one fair admission ($10) and get one for free if you bring a Lowe's receipt along. The receipt can be from months ago and it for as little as a tiny washer part. Sunday there's a Fanta unlimited ride wristband day. For $30 people can go on all rides, as many times as they want all day long. Also, Sunday there's free admission from 10 to noon. Finally, there's a free park and ride shuttle from the state capitol to the fair starting 6pm tonight and 10am on Saturday and Sunday. The 68th edition of the North Florida Fair kicks off its annual 11-day run today. The Giant Wheel towering over South Monroe Street starts turning at 5 p.m., when the gates open on the usual collection of agricultural exhibits, commercial interests, rides, games, fried food and other curiosities. Of special interest this year is a portrait display of the 233 Floridians who have died serving the nation in Iraq and Afghanistan. "It is a tribute to our fallen soldiers," said fair manager Mark Harvey. New this year on the fair's family-oriented entertainment line up is the K9 Kings Flying Dog Show, a group of acrobatic American Indian Dogs featured on Animal Planet. Across the fairgrounds, 10-year-old Nina Tacy lined up with other animal owners waiting to check her bunny, Blizzard, into her first-ever competition and hoping she'd take home a prize. They were among hundreds of people busily preparing Wednesday afternoon for today's opening of the 64th annual Volusia County Fair and Youth Show.
